TermDefinition
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) A federal law that ensures students with disabilities receive special education and related services tailored to their individual needs.
Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) The right of students with disabilities to receive education at no cost that meets their unique needs and prepares them for further education, employment, and independent living.
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) The requirement that students with disabilities be educated with nondisabled peers as much as possible while still meeting their learning needs.
Individualized Education Program (IEP) A legally required written plan that outlines a student’s educational goals, services, accommodations, and placement.
Related Services Support services (such as speech therapy, counseling, or transportation) needed for a student to benefit from special education.
Due Process Legal procedures that protect the rights of students with disabilities and their families when disagreements arise.
Procedural Safeguards Specific protections that ensure parents are informed and involved in decisions about their child’s education.
Zero Reject The principle that no child with a disability can be denied a public education, regardless of the severity of the disability.
Nondiscriminatory Evaluation Assessment procedures that are fair, unbiased, and conducted in the child’s native language or most appropriate mode of communication.
Appropriate Education An educational program that is designed to meet the individual needs of a student with a disability.
Parent Participation The right of parents to be involved in all decisions regarding identification, evaluation, placement, and services for their child.
Confidentiality The protection of a student’s personal and educational information from unauthorized access.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act A civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in programs receiving federal funding.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) A federal law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in schools, workplaces, and public spaces.
Inclusion Educating students with disabilities in general education classrooms with appropriate supports and services.
Mainstreaming Placing students with disabilities in general education settings for part of the school day based on their ability to keep up academically or behaviorally.
Continuum of Alternative Placements A range of educational settings available to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities, from general education to specialized environments.
Discipline Procedures Rules and guidelines that determine how schools respond to behavioral issues involving students with disabilities.
Manifestation Determination A review process to decide whether a student’s behavior was caused by or related to their disability.
