| Term | Definition |

| Plot | The series of events in the story |
| Expositions | the introduction of character background information and setting |
| Rising action | Are events leading up to the climax of the story |
| Falling action | Are events directly following the climax of the story |
| Climax | The most interesting part or turning point in the story |
| Resolution | The conclusion of the story where all the loose ends are tied up |
| Conflict | The problem or the struggle in the story |
| External conflict | Is one that can be seen and involves a character struggling against an opposing farce; another character or obstacle |
| Internal conflict | Occurs within the characters heart or mind |
| Setting | The when, where, and environment of the story |
| Chronological | The way in which events occur in real time |
| Foreshadowing | Hints or clues the author gives about what will happen in the story |
| Flashback | A scene or event from the past that interrupts the present story line |
| Flashforward | A scene or event that jumps forward in time |
| Mood | How the author makes the reader feel |
| Tone | How the author feels |
