Genetics Vocab Set 1

QuestionAnswer
Inheritance the process by which genetic information (DNA) is passed from parents to offspring during reproduction, determining the traits or characteristics the offspring will possess
Variation differences in DNA sequences and alleles
Co-dominance when both dominant alleles in the genotype are fully expressed in a heterozygous individual
Pedigree chart a diagram that uses symbols to map the inheritance of specific genetic traits over generations
Allele a version of a gene (ex. green or yellow pea color)
Dominant allele a version of a gene that always expresses its trait in the phenotypewhen at least one copy is present in the genotype
Recessive allele a version of a gene that is only expressed in an organism’s phenotype when two copies are present
Homozygous having two copies of one allele
Heterozygous having two different alleles
Genotype the genes found in an organism (represented by capital and lowercase letters, ex. YY, Yy, yy)
Phenotype the physical expression of traits (physical, behavioral, or biochemical) determined by the genotype
DNA the molecule that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism
Gene a section of DNA that codes for a protein
Nucleotides the building blocks of DNA, includes nitrogenous bases (A, T, C, G)
