QuestionAnswer
Water A clear liquid that is essential for life on Earth.
Capillary Action Water moving upward through small spaces (like in plant stems) without help from gravity.
Cohesion Water molecules sticking to each other.
Example of cohesion: Water droplets forming beads on a leaf.
Adhesion Water molecules sticking to other substances.
Example of adhesion: Water sticking to the sides of a glass.
Property A characteristic or trait of something (like color, shape, or how it behaves).
Polarity Uneven electrical charge in a molecule that allows it to attract other molecules.
Transfer The movement of something from one place to another (like heat or water).
Energy The ability to do work or cause change (like heat energy warming water).
Atmosphere The layer of gases surrounding Earth.
Hydrosphere All the water on Earth (oceans, rivers, lakes, ice, and water vapor).
Climate The average weather conditions of a place over a long time.
Convection The movement of heat through liquids or gases as warmer material rises and cooler material sinks.
Freeze When a liquid changes into a solid due to cold temperature.
Dissolve When a substance mixes evenly into a liquid.
Specific Heat Capacity The amount of energy needed to change the temperature of a substance.
Solid A state of matter with a fixed shape and volume.
Liquid A state of matter with a fixed volume but no fixed shape.
Gas A state of matter with no fixed shape or volume.
Solute The substance that gets dissolved.
Solvent The substance that dissolves the solute.
Solution A mixture where a solute is evenly mixed in a solvent.
Surface Tension The tight “skin” on the surface of water caused by cohesion.
Example of surface tension: A water strider insect walking on water.
Water Cycle The movement of water through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
Kelvin Scale A temperature scale that starts at absolute zero.
Absolute Scale Another name for the Kelvin temperature scale.
Universal Solvent A substance that dissolves many different materials (water).
Homogeneous Solution A mixture that looks the same throughout.
Examples of homogeneous solutions: Salt water, sugar water, air.
Heterogeneous Solution A mixture with different visible parts.
Examples of heterogeneous solutions: Sand and water, oil and water, salad.
Example of Capillary Action Water moving up a paper towel.
