| hero | the protagonist of a story; the principal character who embodies those superior qualities of a given culture |
| high-angle | a shot in which the camera is positioned above and looks down at the subject, with the resulting effect of diminishing the subject or making it appear vulnerable |
| high-key lighting | a distribution of light within the frame so that the bright tones predominate |
| humanism | any expression in art or philosophy that values, exalts, or penetrates into human endeavors, as opposed to divine or supernatural elements |
| hyperbole | a figure of speech marked by exaggeration |
| impressionism | a highly personal mode of artistic expression in which the subject is presented as it appears to the artist's individual temperament rather than as it appears in actuality |
| intertextuality | the relationship between two or more texts that quote from one another, allude to one another, or in any other manner create connections |
| iris | a transitional device used between shots in which the image seems to disappear (iris in) or grow larger (iris out) within the confines of a circle that expands or contracts, much as the iris in a human eye does |
| irony | a figure of speech in which the actual intent is expressed in words or images that carry the opposite meaning |
| jump cut | a cut that abruptly jumps forward within a single action and creates a sense of discontinuity or dislocation |
