meiosis quiz

TermDefinition
meiotic cell division taking a small idea and breaking it into smaller pieces, then reusing or rearranging those pieces to make something bigger
homologous chromosome a pair of chromosomes that match. 1 from mom and 1 from dad. they carry the same genes in the same order (not always the same versions)
testis development of sperm
the sorting and recombining of genes during meiosis and fertilization offspring with some traits that did not appear in their parents
zygote a single cell formed when a sperm and an egg join; its the very first cell of a new organism (full # of chromosomes)
gamete sex cell (sperm or egg) that joins with another to form a zygote (contain half the # of chromosomes)
crossing over when homologous chromosomes (pair) swap pieces of DNA during meiosis. This creates genetic variation in egg or sperm , so offspring have different combinations of genes than their parents.
meiosis produces ... gametes
nondisjunction when chromosomes don´t separate properly during cell division, so a cell ends up with too many or too few chromosomes.
the process of meiotic cell division in a human male usually forms 4 monoploid cells
mitotic cell division cell divides once to make 2 identical cells with the same # of chromosomes as the og cell, its used for growth , repair and replacing old cells

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
