Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Where is the heart located? | Between the lungs |
| What are the three (3) layers of the heart? | Endocardium, Myocardium, Epicardium |
| Endocardium | Inside lining; lines the chambers and valves |
| Myocardium | Thick muscular layer that makes up the heart wall |
| Epicardium | Outside thin lining, covers the heart |
| Pericardium | Surrounding the fibrous sac (lowkey a sac that protects the heart when its pumping from rubbing directly against the throat) |
| Atria | Upper receiving chambers (singular: Atrium) |
| Ventricles | Lower pumping chambers (singular: Ventricle) |
| Chambers separated by what | Septa (walls) |
| Blood flow through the heart part 1.? | Right atrium receives blood from body |
| Blood flow through the body 2.? | Enters the right ventricle and is pumped to the lungs |
| Blood flow through the body 3.? | Oxygenated blood returns to left atrium |
| Blood flow through the body 4.? | Enters the left ventricle and is pumped to the rest of the body |
| Blood flow through the body 5.? | One-way valves force blood flow forward |
| Blood flow through the body 6.? | Heart sounds produce when valves close |
| Systole | Contraction |
| Diastole | Relaxation |
| heart rate | number of times a heart contract per minute |
| pulse | wave of increased pressure as ventricles contracts |
| heartbeat | starts with both atria contacting |
| cardiac contractions are stimulated by electrical impulses | sinoatrial node (sa node) atrioventricular node (av node) av bundle bundle branches Purkinje fibers |
