Unit 6:Earth's Crust
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Plate Tectonics | Earth's lithosphere are slowly moving and interacting due to convection currents in the mantle; provides an explanation for the current and former positions of continental landmasses, earthquakes, and volcanoes |
| Evidence | data that supports a hypothesis or an argument and is observable through the senses or technology |
| Superposition | the geologic law that states that sedimentary layers are deposited in a time sequence, with the oldest on the bottom and the youngest on the top |
| Earthquake | a shaking or trembling of Earth that is volcanic or tectonic in origin |
| Hot Spot | a place in Earth's upper mantle where hot magma from the lower mantle upwells to melt through the crust usually in the interior of a tectonic plate to form a volcanic feature |
| Mountain Building | the generation of a landmass that projects conspicuously above its surroundings by the collision of two tectonic plates |
| Ocean Basin Formation | the generation of geologic basins below sea level that are made of igneous rock by seafloor spreading or subduction |
| Supervolcano | a volcano that has had an eruption with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 8, the largest recorded value on the index |
| Volcanic Eruption | when ash, gas, and/or lava are released from a volcano—sometimes explosively |
