| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| reactants | What you start with in a chemical reaction found before the arrow |
| products | What you end with in a chemical reaction found after the arrow |
| Chemical Change | making a new substance by creating or breaking chemical bonds |
| Physical Change | changes to the size, shape, or phase of matter but no new substance is created |
| Groups | Vertical columns on the periodic table |
| Periods | horizontal rows on the periodic table |
| Metal | elements on the left of the periodic table that are malleable, have luster, and are good conductors |
| Non-metal | elements on the right of the periodic table that are brittle, do not have luster, and are poor conductors |
| Malleable | the ability of a substance to be molded or bent |
| Brittle | when a substance shatters or breaks into many pieces |
| Luster | when an object is shiny and relfective |
| Metalloid | an element that has some properties of both metals and non-metals |
| Conserve / Conservation | stays the same |
| Coefficient | Large number in front of a chemical formula, tells you how many molecules there are of a certain compound |
| Subscript | small number right after an element, tells you how many atoms of that element are in a compound |
| Endothermic | a chemical reaction where heat is absorbed |
| Exothermic | a chemical reaction where heat is released |
| Atom | smallest unit of a certain element |
| Element | found on the periodic table, a pure substance made of only one type of atom |
| Compound | a substance in which atoms of multiple different elements are chemically bonded together |
| Law of conservation of matter | matter cannot be created or destroyed |
