TermDefinition
Passive transport occurs when substances cross the plasma membrane without any input of energy from the cell.
Diffusion is the movement of a substance across a membrane, due to a difference in concentration, without any help from other molecules.
Osmosis a special type of diffusion — the diffusion of water molecules across a membrane.
transport proteins. protein in a plasma membrane that helps other substances cross the membrane

Active transport occurs when energy is needed for a substance to move across a plasma membrane.
sodium-potassium pump. type of active transport in which sodium ions are pumped out of the cell and potassium ions are pumped into the cell with the help of a carrier protein and energy from ATP
vesicle transport. Very large molecules cross the plasma membrane with a different sort of help,
Endocytosis type of vesicle transport that moves substances into a cell
Exocytosis type of vesicle transport that moves substances out of a cell
