Landforms Vocab

TermDefinition
Ciff A high, steep rock-face.
Archipelago A group of islands.
Mountain An area of rugged land that generally rises higher than 2,000 ft.
Valley An area of low land between hills or mountains.
Canyon A deep, narrow valley with steep walls.
Plateau A large, flat, elevated area of land.
Island An area of land surrounded entirely by water.
Strait A narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies of water.
Delta An area where a river deposits soil into the ocean.
Bay Part of a large body of water that extends into land but is smaller than a gulf.
Oasis An area in the desert with a water source
Desert An extremely dry area with little water and few plants.
Plain A nearly flat area.
Wetland An area of land covered by shallow water. Includes swamps, bogs, and marshes.
Volcano An opening of the Earth's crust where lava, ash, and gasses erupt.
Lake An inland body of water. Most often freshwater
River A natural flow of water that runs through the land.
Isthmus A narrow piece of land connecting two larger land areas.
Glacier A large area of slow-moving ice.
Peninsula An area of land that sticks out into a lake or ocean. Surrounded by water on 3 sides.
Dune A hill of sand shaped by wind
Gulf A large part of the ocean that extends into land.
