TermDefinition
Temperature A measure of how hot or cold the body is.
Hyperthermia Abnormally high body temperature.
Hypothermia Abnormally low body temperature.
Thermometer An instrument used to measure body temperature.
Heart Rate The number of times the heart beats in one minute.
Beats per minute The unit used to measure heart rate.
Pulse The feeling of blood moving through an artery with each heartbeat.
Tachycardia A faster-than-normal heart rate.
Bradycardia A slower-than-normal heart rate.
Radial Artery An artery in the wrist where pulse is commonly checked.
Carotid Artery A major artery in the neck that supplies blood to the brain.
Respiratory Rate The number of breaths taken in one minute.
Breaths per minute The unit used to measure respiratory rate.
Inspiration Breathing air into the lungs.
Expiration Breathing air out of the lungs.
Blood Oxygen Saturation / Pulse Ox The percentage of oxygen carried by the blood.
Pulse Oximeter A device that measures blood oxygen levels.
Oxygen A gas needed by the body’s cells to produce energy.
Carbon Dioxide A waste gas produced by cells and removed by breathing.
Hemoglobin A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Erythrocytes Your red blood cells. Their main job is to carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
Blood Pressure The "push" or force of your blood against the walls of your blood vessels as it moves through your body.
Sphygmomanometer Short for "millimeters of mercury." It is just the unit of measurement used for pressure, like inches are for height.
Systole / Systolic When your heart squeezes (contracts) to push blood out. This is the top number of a blood pressure reading.
Diastole / Diastolic When your heart relaxes and refills with blood between beats. This is the bottom number of a blood pressure reading.
mmHg Short for "millimeters of mercury." It is just the unit of measurement used for pressure, like inches are for height.
Korotkoff Sounds pulsating, tapping, swishing, or muffled sounds heard with a stethoscope
Brachial Artery The main blood vessel in your upper arm. It’s the spot where doctors usually listen for your pulse when taking blood pressure.
Hypertension The tapping or thumping sounds a doctor hears through a stethoscope while they are letting air out of the blood pressure cuff.
Hypotension A test that records the electrical signals of your heart to see if it is beating normally. It usually looks like a "squiggly line" on a screen.
Stethoscope The tool a doctor wears around their neck to listen to your heart, lungs, and blood flow.
Electrocardiogram Low blood pressure. It means the blood isn't pushing hard enough.
Body Mass Index (BMI) A simple score based on your height and weight to see if you are in a healthy weight range for your size.
