| Homeostasis | The body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment (like temperature, pH, and blood sugar). |
| Medical History | A record of a patient’s past and present illnesses, conditions, treatments, and medications. |
| Current History | Information about the patient’s current health problem or illness. |
| Previous History | Information about past illnesses, surgeries, or medical conditions. |
| Social History | Information about a person’s lifestyle, habits, job, family life, and environment that may affect health. |
| Chief Complaint | The main reason the patient is seeking medical care, stated in their own words. |
| Physical Signs | Objective findings that can be observed or measured by a healthcare provider (e.g., fever, rash). |
| Symptoms | Subjective experiences reported by the patient (e.g., pain, nausea, dizziness). |
| Diagnosis | Identification of a disease or condition based on signs, symptoms, and tests. |
| Differential Diagnosis | A list of possible conditions that could explain the patient’s symptoms. |
| Empathy | The ability to understand and share another person’s feelings. |
| Demeanor | A person’s outward behavior or appearance, especially during an interaction. |
| Tact | The ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully. |
| Artery | A blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. |
| Vein | A blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart. |
| Hyper | A prefix meaning excessive, above normal, or too much. |
| Hypo | A prefix meaning below normal or too little. |
| -emia | A suffix meaning a condition of the blood. |
| -itis | A suffix meaning inflammation. |
| Chemical Reaction | A process in which substances interact to form new substances. |
| HIPAA | A federal law that protects the privacy and security of a patient’s medical information. |
| Risk Factor | Anything that increases the chance of developing a disease or condition. |
| Triage | The process of deciding the order in which patients receive care based on how serious their condition is. |
| Immune System | The body’s defense system that fights infections and diseases. |
| Mucus | A thick, slippery substance that protects and lubricates body tissues and traps germs. |
| Lymph | A clear fluid that carries white blood cells and helps remove waste from tissues. |
| Lymph Nodes | Small, bean-shaped structures that filter lymph and help fight infection. |
| Cancer | A disease in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and can spread to other parts of the body. |
| Carcinogen | A substance or exposure that can cause cancer. |
| Inflammation | The body’s response to injury or infection, causing redness, swelling, heat, and pain. |
