| Pericardium | Serous membrane that surrounds the heart. |
| Epicardium | The visceral portion of the pericardium on the surface of the heart. |
| Myocardium | Muscle tissue of the heart. |
| Endocardium | Inner lineing of the heart chambers. |
| Atria | Chamber that receives blood from veins. |
| Auricles | An earlike structure; the portion of the heart that forms the wall of an atrium. |
| Ventricles | A cavity, such as brain ventricles filled with cerebrospinal fluid, or heart ventricles that contain blood. |
| Sulcus | A shallow groove, such as that between convolutions on the surface of the brain. |
| Tricuspid Valve | Heart valve located between the right atrium and right ventricle. |
| Mitral Valve | Heart valve located between the left atrium and left ventricle; bicuspid valve. |
| Aortic Valve | Flaplike structures in the wall of the aorta near its origin that prevent blood from returning to the left ventricle of the heart. |
| Coronary Arteries | An artery that supplies blood to the wall of the heart. |
| Cardiac Veins | Blood vessel that returns blood from the venules of the myocardium to the coronary sinus. |
| Systole | Phase of the cardiac cycle during which a heart chamber wall contracts. |
| Diastole | Phase of the cardiac cycle when a heart chamber wall relaxes. |
| Pacemaker | Mass of specialized cardiac muscle tissue that controls the rhythm of the heartbeat; the sinoatrial node. |
| Electrocardiogram | A recording of the electral activity associated with the heartbeat. |
| Arteries | A vessel that transports blood away from the heart. |
| Vasoconstriction | A decrease in the diameter of a blood vessel. |
| Vasodilation | An increase in the diameter of a blood vessel. |
| Capillaries | A small blood vessel that connects an arteroile and a venule. |
| Venules | A vessel that carries blood from capillaries to a vein. |
| Veins | A vessel that carries blood toward the heart. |
| Systolic Pressure | Arterial blood pressure during the systolic phase of the cardiac cycle. |
| Diastolic Pressure | Arterial blood pressure during the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle. |
