QuestionAnswer
Pericardium Serous membrane that surrounds the heart.
Epicardium The visceral portion of the pericardium on the surface of the heart.
Myocardium Muscle tissue of the heart.
Endocardium Inner lineing of the heart chambers.
Atria Chamber that receives blood from veins.
Auricles An earlike structure; the portion of the heart that forms the wall of an atrium.
Ventricles A cavity, such as brain ventricles filled with cerebrospinal fluid, or heart ventricles that contain blood.
Sulcus A shallow groove, such as that between convolutions on the surface of the brain.
Tricuspid Valve Heart valve located between the right atrium and right ventricle.
Mitral Valve Heart valve located between the left atrium and left ventricle; bicuspid valve.
Aortic Valve Flaplike structures in the wall of the aorta near its origin that prevent blood from returning to the left ventricle of the heart.
Coronary Arteries An artery that supplies blood to the wall of the heart.
Cardiac Veins Blood vessel that returns blood from the venules of the myocardium to the coronary sinus.
Systole Phase of the cardiac cycle during which a heart chamber wall contracts.
Diastole Phase of the cardiac cycle when a heart chamber wall relaxes.
Pacemaker Mass of specialized cardiac muscle tissue that controls the rhythm of the heartbeat; the sinoatrial node.
Electrocardiogram A recording of the electral activity associated with the heartbeat.
Arteries A vessel that transports blood away from the heart.
Vasoconstriction A decrease in the diameter of a blood vessel.
Vasodilation An increase in the diameter of a blood vessel.
Capillaries A small blood vessel that connects an arteroile and a venule.
Venules A vessel that carries blood from capillaries to a vein.
Veins A vessel that carries blood toward the heart.
Systolic Pressure Arterial blood pressure during the systolic phase of the cardiac cycle.
Diastolic Pressure Arterial blood pressure during the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle.
