Aetiology

TermDefinition
Family Cancer Syndrome Often due to learnt behaviour such as smoking or obesity. Can be 5-10% of cancer cases
Genes Genes are pieces of DNA. They contain the instructions on how to make proteins, when to destroy damaged cells, and how to keep the cells in balance.
Signs of Family Cancer Syndrome Many cases of an uncommon or rare type of cancer (like kidney cancer). Cancers occurring at younger ages than usual (like colon cancer in a 20 year old)
Signs of family cancer syndrome More than one type of cancer in a single person (like a woman with both breast and ovarian)
Viruses These can increase the risk of cancer development. Including, Hepatitis B & C, HIV/AIDS.
Hormones Oestrogen have an essential role, together with other hormones, in the development of the female sex organs and secondary sex characteristics, the regulation of the menstrual cycle and reproduction.
Hormones Oestrogen Affect cancer risk by promoting cell growth, particularly in hormone-sensitive cancers like some breast and uterine (endometrial) cancers, where they bind to receptors, causing cancerous cells to multiply.
Lifestyle Factors Smoking, Alcohol, diet, PA, Poor background.
Preventable Factors 42% cancers are preventable
Smoking the largest preventable factor (19%)
