Elements of Story!

Learn the elements of plot and story today! Hell yeah!

TermDefinition
Plot the sequence of events that make up a story. The beginning to the end. What happens!
Freytag's pyramid visual pyramid of the elements of plot and how they are sequenced. Pretty useful!
Exposition introduction of the setting, main characters, conflict, background, context, everything! The groundwork!
Inciting Incident the moment that sets the main character on their adventure!
Rising Action the sequence of events that follow the inciting incident. Conflicts develop as everything leads towards the climax!
Climax The turning point of the story. Where everything changes...something happens that changes the main character's course.
Falling Action the sequence of events that follow the climax. Loose ends start to get tied as we head towards our resolution!
Resolution/Denouement all the loose ends are finally tied in the ending of the story
Setting the time and place where a story takes place
Theme the main message that a story attempts to preach
Dialogue thoughts and spoken words between characters that moves the plot along
Point of View the perspective from which a story is told (first-person, third-person, etc.)
Conflict the central struggle that drives the plot forward. Can be man vs man, man vs group, man vs self, etc...
