intellectual disabilities newer term for "mental retardation" a disability in intelligence and adaptive behaviors
emotional or behavior disorder terminology proposed by the national mental health and special education coalition to replace federal terminolgy "emotional disturbance"
emotional disturbance term used in federal special education laws regulations for problematic behavior that interferes with education; term used to indicate the problems of emotionally disturbed students
deinstitutionalization social movement in the 60s where large numbers with intellectual disabilities are moved from large mental institutions into smaller communities
EACA was amended to become IDEA
IDEA first federal law mandating free public education for all children with disabilites
ADA gives civil right protection to individuals on the basis of race, sex, national orgin, and religion
