Flapper In the 1920s women who rebelled against traditional values - these women dressed differently, smoked in public and visited speakeasies
Great Depression the most severe economic decline in United States history, begin- ning in 1929
Harlem Renaissance During the 1920s large numbers of African American musicians, artists, and writers settled in Harlem in New York City - led to a rebirth in African American culture
Hooverville a group of shacks in which the homeless lived during the Great Depression
Hundred Days First 3 months of FDR's presidency - dealt primarily with problems of the Depression
Installment buying During the 1920s many people bought items on credit; it was a new policy of "buy now pay later" - put many into debt; the consumer would make a down payment then pay monthly until the product was paid for plus interest
Mass Culture a set of shared practices and beliefs that arise from widespread exposure to the same media
New Deal Enacted by FDR and Congress - created programs to provide jobs such as the CCC and WPA, fixed banking problems with the FDIC
On margin Buying stock with only a 10% down payment.; the buyer would hold the stock until the price rose and then sell it to make a profit
Pension A sum paid regularly to a person usually after retirement
Prohibition To outlaw the drinking of alcohol
Public Works Program Set up by Hoover, hired workers to construct schools, courthous- es, dams and pave highways
Red Scare Radicals were arrested and foreigners were deported
Relief Giving help to the needy
Social Security Act Passed in 1935 - set up a system of pensions for the retired, set up unemployment insurance and gave states money to support dependent children and people with disabilities
Stock exchange A place where shares in corporations are bought and sold through an organized system
The Growing Auto Industry Other industries such as steel, road construction, gas stations and restaurants increased
Unemployment insurance Payments by the government for a limited period of time to people who lost their jobs
Wagner Act Law passed in 1935, protected American workers from unfair management practices - gave workers the right to collective bar- gaining
Works Progress Administration New Deal program that employed men and women to build hospitals, schools, parks, and airports; employed artists, writers, and musicians as well
