Quiz 1

QuestionAnswer
Modernity The movement or condition in which a society understands itself as new and distinct from the past. This is in opposition to tradition. Modernity is not simply a time period, but a project that is ongoing.
Aesthetic Modernity Modernity that is expressed through art and culture. Rather than having a specific style/aesthetic, it is focused on a constant motif. That is the consciousness and changed experience of time.
Avant-Garde Art that pushes into unknown, foreign territory. This is art that seeks to push the envelope and uncover innovation to shape the future. It is often experimental and perhaps sometimes incomprehensible to understand at first glance.
Postmodernity Comes after the idea of modernity and is posed as a reaction against it. It questions if modernity is still a valid cause, as it produces a fainter response in the current day.
Cultural Modernity The division of culture into autonomous factions. Science, morality, and art are all separate and work inside their own frameworks.
The Project of Modernity/Enlightenment The push to separate different fields (science, morality, and art) in regard to their own logic. This would be in tandem with using them to improve everyday life, social justice, and human freedom.
Neoconservatism A perspective that points the finger at modernism to blame for social issues. It seeks to diminish modernist culture, while promoting ideas of tradition, conservatism, and a capitalist mindset.
