Subjunctive with emotion and will Use subjunctive when one person expresses emotion, desire, influence, or preference toward another person’s action.
Subjunctive with suggestions/desires/demands Verbs like recomendar, querer, pedir, exigir trigger subjunctive when influencing another subject.
Subjunctive with emotion verbs Verbs that express feelings (fear, happiness, surprise, sadness) require subjunctive in the second clause.
Subjunctive with impersonal expressions of emotion Phrases like es triste, es bueno, es una lástima cause subjunctive in the dependent clause.
Infinitive vs. subjunctive (one subject = infinitive) If only one subject performs the action, use infinitives. Use subjunctive when there are two different subjects.
Por (uses) Expresses duration, exchange, reason/motive, communication/transportation, movement through a place, or doing something on behalf of someone.
Por (expressions) Fixed expressions with por that must be memorized (ex: por favor, por ejemplo, por la mañana, etc.).
Para (uses) Indicates purpose, destination, deadline, function/use, or opinion.
Nosotros commands (regular) Formed with the present subjunctive “nosotros” form; means “let’s + verb.”
Nosotros commands (stem-changing -ir verbs) In -ir verbs, e→i and o→u changes occur in the nosotros command.
Nosotros commands (-car, -gar, -zar verbs) Spelling changes occur to maintain sound (car→qu, gar→gu, zar→c).
Pronouns with nosotros commands Pronouns attach to affirmative commands and go before negative commands.
Reflexive/reciprocal pronouns in nosotros commands Drop final -s before adding nos or se to affirmative commands.
Possessive pronouns (formation) Formed with long-form possessive adjectives plus definite article; replace a previously mentioned noun.
Possessive pronouns with ser Article may be omitted after ser.
