A&P Directional Term

TermDefinition
Anterior towards front of the body
Posterior towards back of the body
Superior above, towards the head
Inferior below, away from the head
Proximal towards the beginning of the limb
Distal away from the beginning of the limb
Superficial closest to the skin
Deep furthest from the skin
Medial towards the midline of the body
Lateral away from the midline of the body
Unilateral only one side of the midline
Bilateral on right and left of the midline
Contralateral opposite sides of the body
Ipsilateral same side of the body
