QuestionAnswer
What was the composition of the material that the solar system came from? The Big Bang Theory caused there to be hydrogen and helium in our solar system
what are the Inner planets made up of? (Rocky planets) Rock, metal, and closer to the sun so they are warmer
What are the Outer planets made up of? (Gas giants) Hydrogen, Helium, ice, and they are further from the sun so they are colder
Large objects that can be found in our solar system Gas giants; outer solar system, made of gas, ice, and metal Asteroids; In the asteroid belt, made of rock, and metal Moons; Inner and outer solar system, made of rock, and metal
Describe how comets change when they near the sun? Comet heats up as it gets closer to the sun by solar radiation - Produces a coma - might form a tail that will always point away from sun - coma and tail grow as it nears the sun then fades and shrinks as it moves away - far away from sun=inactive
Explain why planets stay in orbit around the sun The gravitational pull that the sun has pulls the planets towards itself while the planets gravitational pull wants them to move in a straight line causing planets to orbit around the sun
What kind of path do planets take around the sun? They move in an oval-like motion called an ellipse
How does a planet's velocity change as it orbits the Sun? Planets move more rapidly when it is closer to the sun and less rapidly when its further from the sun
Gravity The natural attraction between physical bodies due to their masses
Explain how gravity is affected by mass Doubling the mass of one object in a system would double the pull of gravity on the object
Explain how gravity is affected by distance Doubling the distance separating two objects would result in them experiencing a lot less of the gravitational pull

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
