Colony A colony is a settlement started by people from another country.
Indentured Servant An indentured servant was a person who agreed to work for several years in exchange for passage food and shelter.
Indigenous Indigenous people are the first or original people of a place.
Enslaved People Enslaved people were owned by others and forced to work without freedom or pay.
Property Property is something that is owned by a person or group.
Mayflower Compact The Mayflower Compact was a written agreement that created rules for government in Plymouth Colony.
Pilgrims The Pilgrims were English settlers who came to America for religious freedom.
Jamestown Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America.
Tobacco Tobacco was a cash crop that helped Jamestown make money.
Cash Crop A cash crop is a crop grown mainly to be sold for money.
Plantation A plantation was a large farm where many workers grew crops.
Southern Colonies The Southern Colonies were known for plantations and farming.
Middle Colonies The Middle Colonies were known for trade and farming.
New England Colonies The New England Colonies were known for religion fishing and trade.
Fur Trade The fur trade was the buying and selling of animal fur for money.
New Amsterdam New Amsterdam was the original name of New York.
Slavery Slavery was a system where people were owned and forced to work for others.
Indentured Servitude Indentured servitude was a system where people worked for a set number of years to repay a debt.
Labor Labor is the work done by people.
Colonization Colonization is the act of settling in and taking control of new land.
Religious Freedom Religious freedom is the right to practice ones religion without fear.
