Constituents of Cell
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Organic substances | chemicals containing both carbon and hydrogen; most likely to dissolve in organic solvents |
| Carbohydrates | organic - provides most of the energy cells require |
| Lipids | organic - insoluble in water, most common type is fat and primarily store energy |
| Proteins | organic - serve as structural material, energy sources, hormones, etc. building blocks are amino acids |
| Nucleic acids | organic - made up building blocks called nucleotides, form genes and take part in protein synthesis |
| Inorganic substances | chemicals that dissolve in water or react with it; don't contain BOTH carbon and hydrogen |
| Water | inorganic - most abundant compound in living material, important solvent, important for moving chemicals within the body |
| Oxygen | inorganic - enters the body through respiration, cellular organelles use it to release energy from sugar glucose and other nutrients |
| Carbon Dioxide | inorganic - produced as a waste product after cellular respiration |
| Salts | inorganic - compound composed of oppositely charged ions such as sodium; abundant in tissues and fluids |
