synthesis reaction 2 or more substances combine to form ONE new compound

decomposition reaction a reaction in which a SINGLE compound breaks apart to form 2 or more simpler substances
electrolysis the use of an electrical current to decompose a substance
-lysis Greek suffix meaning to loosen
single replacement reaction a reaction in which one element replaces a similar element in a compound
single displacement reaction a synonym for single replacement reaction
double-replacement reaction a reaction in which the ions of two compounds exchange places in a aqueous solution
combustion reaction a reaction in which a substance combines with oxygen producing heat and light (fire, explosion)
