Limited Gov´t Gov´t is restricted by laws and the Constitution
Republicanism The people elect representatives to make laws and decisions
Federalism Power is shared between state and gov´t
Checks and Balances Each branch can limit the others power so they don´t become to powerful
Separation of Powers Gov´t power is divided among the 3 branches with each branch having separate duties
Popular Sovereignty The power comes from the people, citizens have a vote in how they´re governed
Common law Traditional English laws based on court decisions and customs which influenced trial by jury
Debates Delegates disagreed about how much power the Federal gov´t should have and how states should be represented.
Plan The V.A plan favored big states while the N.J plan made every states equal.
Great compromise Combined the 2 plans-congress. Senate would be equal House of rep based on Population
3/5 Comprimise Decides hows enslaved people would be counted for
Federalists Supported the constitution
Antifederalists Worried that the gov´t would get to much power
Bill of Rights Protects freedoms- First 10 amendments
Due Process Gov´t must follow fair procedures and laws before taking someone life,liberty, and property
Equal Justice Under Law Everyone must be treated equal in court
Equal Protection Laws apply to everyone equally.
Elective and Representative Gov´t Citizens vote to choose leaders who represent their views
Private Property People can own things and the Gov´t can´t take their property without good reason and fair payment.
Rule of Law Everyone is equal including leaders, must follow the law
Supremacy Clause The U.S. Constitution is the highest law in the land
Separation of Powers Used to emphasize how the power is divided among the branches
U.S. Constitution An amendment must be approved by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and then ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures
V.A Constitution An amendment must be passed by the General Assembly (Virginia’s legislature) two times and then approved by Virginia voters in a general election
