Bronchioles Smaller branches of bronchi inside the lungs
Alveoli Tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs
Capillaries Small blood vessels surrounding alveoli for gas exchange
Respiratory rate Number of breaths taken per minute
Upper respiratory tract Involves air intake, filtering, warming, and humidification
Lower respiratory tract Transports air and performs gas exchange
Vestibular region Nasal region with coarse hairs that filter debris
Olfactory region Nasal region responsible for smell
Respiratory region Nasal region that warms and humidifies air
Paranasal sinuses Air-filled cavities that moisturize and protect respiratory tract
Nasopharynx Upper pharynx section for air passage
Oropharynx Pharynx section for air, food, and liquids
Laryngopharynx Lower pharynx section leading to trachea or esophagus
Epiglottis Flap that prevents food and liquid from entering the airway
Glottis Opening between the vocal cords
Lungs Main organs of respiration containing bronchi and alveoli
Diaphragm Dome-shaped muscle that controls breathing by changing chest volume
Pleurae Membranes that protect lungs and reduce friction
Mediastinum Central chest cavity separating the lungs
Medulla oblongata Brain region that controls breathing
Phrenic nerve Nerve that signals the diaphragm to contract
Carbon dioxide levels Determine breathing rate
Smoking and vaping Damage lung tissue and impair respiratory function
