| Formation | An arrangement of people or things acting as one unit |
| Prime Minister | The head of the government and some countries |
| Alliance | In agreement between two nations to help each other in war time |
| Treaty | A formal agreement between two or more group groups, especially countries |
| Proclamation | An important official announcement that is usually made to the public |
| Salutary neglect | An unofficial British policy of not enforcing regulations in the colonies |
| Tax | Money that people are required to pay to support the workings of the government |
| Rights of Englishmen | Traditional legal rights that all English subjects in England were guaranteed |
| Burgess | A representative to the legislature in colonial Virginia or Maryland |
| Quarter | To give temporary lodging and meals to soldiers |
| Trial by jury | A case of law decided by a group of one’s fellow citizens |
| Intolerable | Unbearable |
| Massacre | The violent killing of defenseless people |
| Militia | A group of armed citizens prepared for military service at any time |
