| Prereferral | To ensure that students receive evidence-based instruction before they are evaluated for special education |
| Multidisciplinary Team | A group of professionals from different fields (general education, special education, psychology, speech/language, etc.) who work together to evaluate, plan, and make decisions about a student’s services. |
| Response to Intervention (RTI) | Refers to a student's change or lack of change in academic performance or behavior as a result of instruction. |
| Screening Instruments | Brief tools used to identify students who may be at risk for academic or behavioral difficulties and may need additional support. |
| Progress Monitoring | The ongoing collection of data to measure a student’s improvement over time and evaluate the effectiveness of instruction or interventions. |
| Curriculum Based Measurement (CBM) | A type of progress monitoring that uses short, frequent assessments directly tied to the curriculum to track student performance. |
| Early Intervening Services | Supports provided to students who are struggling academically or behaviorally before they are identified for special education. |
| Individualized Education Program (IEP) | Ensures that students receive the instruction needed to succeed as much as possible. |
| Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) | A legal document that describes the services that the child will receive. |
| Transition Plans | Plans included in an IEP that prepare students with disabilities for life after high school such as college, work, and independent living. |
| Supported Employment | Competitive employment where individuals with disabilities receive ongoing support (job coaching, training) to succeed in the workplace. |
| Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) | The requirement that students with disabilities be educated with nondisabled peers as much as possible, while still meeting their needs. |
| Collaborative Consultation | A partnership where general and special educators (and others) work together to plan instruction and supports for a student. |
| Coteaching | General and special education teachers working together in the general education classroom to address the educational needs of both students with and without disabilities. |
| Cooperative Learning | An instructional strategy that many proponents of inclusion believe is an effective way to integrate students with disabilities into groups of non-disabled peers. |
| Peer Mediated Instruction | Teaching strategies that use classmates to support the learning or behavior of students with disabilities. |
| Peer Tutoring | : A structured approach where one student provides academic help to another student. |
| Peer Confederates | Peers who are trained to model or prompt appropriate academic or social behaviors. |
| Class Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) | A system where all students participate in peer tutoring by rotating roles of tutor and learner. |
| Partial Participation | Allowing students with disabilities to take part in some aspects of an activity even if they cannot complete it fully. |
| Modifications | Changes to what a student is expected to learn (lowered or altered learning standards). |
| Accomodations | Changes to how a student learns or demonstrates learning without changing the content. |
| Adaptations | Adjustments to instruction, materials, or environment to help students access learning (often used as a general term that includes accommodations and modifications). |
| Tiered Assignments | Assignments at different levels of difficulty based on student readiness, all focused on the same learning goal. |
| Universal Design | Designing environments and products so they are usable by everyone without the need for adaptation |
| Universal Design for Learning (UDL) | A teaching framework that provides multiple ways of engagement, representation, and expression to support all learners. |
| Cochlear Implants | Electronic devices that bypass damaged parts of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve to provide sound. |
| Implantations | The surgical placement of a cochlear implant into the inner ear. |
