Archaeologist

Archaeologist A person who studies the past by examining the remains left behind by earlier people
Archaeology The study of past human life and activities throgh the invertigation of physical remains
Artefact An object made or used by people in the past such as tools weapons jewellery or pottery
Site A place where evidence of past human activity found
Excavation The careful digging and recording of an archaeologist site to uncover evidence of the past
Stratigraphy The stuty of layers of soil at a site lower layear are usually older than those above them
Layers A level of soil or material laid down over time at archaeological site
Dating The process of finding out how old an artefact or site is
Carbon-14 Dating A scientificmethod used to date organic materials such as wood bone or seeds
Relative dating Placing finds in order from oldest to newest withouot giving an exact date
Survey A method used to lovate archaeolofical site without digging
Aerial photography Photography taken from the air to identify shape or crop marks that show buried remains
Geophysics The use of scientific equipment to detect underground features without excavation
Recording The detailed drawing photography and writing about finds during excavation
Preservation The protection of archaeological remains so they are not damaged or destroyed
conservation Thye careful cleaning and repair of archaeofacts after excabation
Prehistory The period before written records studied mainly through achaeology
Trowel used for careful digging and scraping soil during excavation
Brush Usedd to gently clean artefacts and bone without damaging them
Shovel /spade Used to remove topsoil at the start of an excavation
Sieve Used to separete small artefacts from soil
Measuring tape Used to seasure the position and of finds
Camera Used to photograph the site layers and artefacts for records
Notebook Used to write detailed note about finds and excavation progress
Drawing equipment Used to draw plans and sections of the site
