Needs for Exceptional Learners

Prereferral Students receive evidence-based instruction before they are evaluated for special education.
Multidisciplinary Team Helps prevent an inaccurate placement in special education.
Response to Intervention A process that determines whether the child responds to scientific, research-based intervention evaluation.
Screening Instruments Identify students who may be at increased risk of school failure.
Progress Monitoring Provides information on whether a student is learning as expected.
Curriculum-based measurement Students' responses to their usual instructional materials; it entails direct and frequent samples from the student's curriculum.
Early Intervening Services A service or program that helps and assists with younger children.
Individualized Education Program To ensure students to receive instruction needed to succeed.
Individualized Family Service Plan Describes the services that the child will receive
Transition Plans A coordinated set of outcome-oriented activities that promote movement from school.
Supported Employment Students with disabilities get help finding a job and support.
Least Restrictive Environment Student should be separated from nondisabled classmates and from home, family, and community as little as possible
Collaborative Consultation The Special Ed teacher provides advice to the General Ed teacher
Co-teaching General and special teachers working together to address the needs for both disability and non-disability students.
Cooperative Learning Instructional strategy that many proponents of inclusion believe is an effective way to integrate students with disabilities into groups.
Peer-Mediated Instruction Managing behavior problems or help train peers to help teach an academic or social skill to a classmate.
Class wide Peer Tutoring All students in the general ed classroom routinely engage in peer tutoring for particular subject matter.
Partial Participation Entails students with disabilities to participate in general ed classroom activities.
Modification Form of amended materials or assignments and differ from changes to curricula or instructional activities.
Accommodations Changes in instruction to help students with the difficulty in learning.
Adaptations Making changes to the learning environment.
Tiered Assignments Teachers can provide choices of varying difficulty for assignments.
Universal Design for Learning Make learning accessible to more students in inclusionary programs.
