Serous Membranes

| Serous Membranes: | covers the organs of the body cavities and line the cavity |
| Visceral Serous Membrane: | membrane that covers the organ |
| Parietal Serous Membrane: | membrane line lines the cavity |
| Pericardium | surrounds the heart; contains pericardial fluid |
| Pleura | surrounds the lungs and lines the thoracic cavity; contains pleural fluid |
| Peritoneum | surrounds many abdominal organs and lines the abdominopelvic cavity; contains peritoneal fluid |
| Mesentery | regions of double folded visceral peritoneum that is attached to certain points to the posterior abdominopelvic wall - provide a pathway for nerves & blood vessels to reach the digestive organs |
| Retroperitoneal | behind the peritoneum; organs or parts of organs that only have peritoneum on their peritoneal cavity side - include kidneys, ureters, adrenal glands, part of pancreas, part of large intestine, and urinary bladder |
| Inflammation of Serous Membranes Due to Infection | can be serios ex: pericarditis, pleurisy, peritonitis |
| Pericarditis | inflammation of the pericardium |
| Pleurisy | inflammation of the pleura |
| Peritonitis | inflammation of the peritoneum |
