| Anatomical Position: | body erect, face forward, feet together, palms face forward |
| Other Body Positions: | Supine: lying face upward Prone: lying face downward |
| Directional Terms: | - superior (cephalic) v inferior (caudal) - medial v lateral - proximal v distal - superficial v deep - anterior (ventral) v posterior (dorsal) |
| superior (cephalic) v inferior (caudal) | toward or away from the head |
| medial v lateral | relative to the midline |
| proximal v distal | used to describe linear structures |
| superficial v deep | relative to the surface of the body |
| anterior (ventral) v posterior (dorsal) | anterior is forward, posterior is toward the back |
