QuestionAnswer
Homeostasis The body’s ability to maintain stable internal conditions.
Medical History A complete record of a patient’s past and present health information.
Current History Information about the patient’s present illness or condition.
Previous History Past illnesses, surgeries, injuries, or treatments.
Social History Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol use, and living conditions.
Family History Health conditions that run in a patient’s biological family.
Chief Complaint The main reason the patient is seeking medical care.
Physical Signs Objective findings observed or measured by a healthcare provider.
Symptoms Subjective experiences reported by the patient (e.g., pain, nausea).
Diagnosis Identification of a disease or condition based on evaluation.
Differential Diagnosis A list of possible conditions with similar symptoms.
Empathy Understanding and sharing another person’s feelings.
Demeanor A person’s outward behavior or attitude.
Tact Sensitivity and diplomacy when dealing with others.
Artery A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
Vein A blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart.
Hyper- Prefix meaning excessive or above normal.
Hypo- Prefix meaning deficient or below normal.
-emia Suffix meaning a condition of the blood.
-itis Suffix meaning inflammation.
Chemical Reaction A process that changes substances into new substances.
HIPAA A law that protects patient privacy and medical information.
Risk Factor Something that increases the chance of disease or injury.
Triage Sorting patients based on urgency of care.
Immune System The body’s defense system against disease.
Mucus A thick fluid that protects and lubricates tissues.
Lymph A clear fluid that carries immune cells.
Lymph Nodes Small structures that filter lymph and fight infection.
Cancer A disease involving uncontrolled cell growth.
Carcinogen A substance that can cause cancer.
Inflammation The body’s response to injury or infection, causing redness, swelling, heat, and pain.
Temperature A measure of body heat.
Hyperthermia Abnormally high body temperature.
Hypothermia Abnormally low body temperature.
Thermometer An instrument used to measure temperature.
Heart Rate The number of heartbeats per minute.
Beats per Minute (BPM) Unit used to measure heart rate.
Pulse The rhythmic expansion of an artery as blood is pumped.
Tachycardia Abnormally fast heart rate.
Bradycardia Abnormally slow heart rate.
Radial Artery An artery in the wrist used to check pulse.
Carotid Artery A major artery in the neck supplying blood to the brain.
Respiratory Rate Number of breaths taken per minute.
Breaths per Minute Unit used to measure respiratory rate.
Inspiration Breathing in.
Expiration Breathing out.
Blood Oxygen Saturation / Pulse Ox Percentage of oxygen in the blood.
Pulse Oximeter A device that measures oxygen saturation.
Oxygen A gas essential for cellular respiration.
Carbon Dioxide A waste gas produced by cells.
Hemoglobin A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Erythrocytes Red blood cells.
Blood Pressure The force of blood against artery walls.
Sphygmomanometer A device used to measure blood pressure.
Systole / Systolic Pressure when the heart contracts.
Diastole / Diastolic Pressure when the heart relaxes.
mmHg Millimeters of mercury, a unit of pressure.
Korotkoff Sounds Sounds heard when measuring blood pressure.
Brachial Artery The artery in the upper arm used for BP measurement.
Hypertension High blood pressure.
Hypotension Low blood pressure.
Stethoscope An instrument used to listen to body sounds.
Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) A test that records electrical activity of the heart.
Body Mass Index (BMI) A measure of body fat based on height and weight.
