| Homeostasis | The body’s ability to keep its internal conditions stable (like temperature and blood sugar). |
| Medical History | A record of a patient’s past and present health information. |
| Current History | Information about the patient’s present illness or reason for the visit. |
| Previous History | The patient’s past illnesses, surgeries, injuries, or treatments. |
| Social History | Information about lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol use, job, and living situation. |
| Family History | Health conditions that run in the patient’s family. |
| Chief Complaint | The main problem or reason the patient seeks medical care. |
| Physical Signs | Objective findings that can be seen or measured (fever, rash, high blood pressure). |
| Symptoms | Subjective feelings reported by the patient (pain, nausea, dizziness). |
| Diagnosis | The identification of a disease or condition. |
| Differential Diagnosis | A list of possible conditions that could explain the patient’s symptoms. |
| Empathy | The ability to understand and share another person’s feelings. |
| Demeanor | A person’s outward behavior or attitude. |
| Tact | Sensitivity in dealing with others; being careful not to offend. |
| Artery | A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart. |
| Vein | A blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart. |
| Hyper- | A prefix meaning excessive or above normal. |
| Hypo- | A prefix meaning below normal or deficient. |
| -emia | A suffix meaning a condition of the blood. |
| -itis | A suffix meaning inflammation. |
| Chemical Reaction | A process in which substances change into new substances. |
| HIPAA | A U.S. law that protects the privacy of patient health information. |
| Risk Factor | Something that increases the chance of developing a disease or condition. |
| Triage | The process of prioritizing patients based on the severity of their condition. |
| Immune System | The body’s defense system against infection and disease. |
| Mucus | A thick fluid that protects and moistens tissues and traps germs |
| Lymph | A clear fluid that carries immune cells and removes waste from tissues. |
| Lymph Nodes | Small structures that filter lymph and help fight infection. |
| Cancer | A disease in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably. |
| Carcinogen | A substance that can cause cancer. |
| Inflammation | The body’s response to injury or infection, causing redness, heat, swelling, and pain. |
