Classical civilization Advanced state of development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions
Democracy A form of government in which people choose leaders by voting
Dynasty A family of rulers who rule over a country for a long period of time
Empire A group of countries or regions that are controlled by one ruler or one government
Golden Age A period of peace, prosperity, and cultural achievements
Gynaeceum Rooms in a Greek house set aside for women
Krater A large vase used to mix wine and water in Ancient Greece
Monarchy A form of government with a king or queen at the head who inherits the position due to his/her family
Oligarchy A small group of people having control of a country
Periodization Dividing a subject into historical eras for purposes of analysis and study
Republic A country that is governed by elected representatives and by an elected leader (such as a president) rather than by an inherited king or queen

Symposium Gathering where men drank together, conversed, and enjoyed themselves usually following a dinner tyrant
