| 4. City- state | A city that with its surrounding territory forms an independent state classical civilization |
| 5. Classical civilization | advanced state of development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions |
| 6. Democracy | a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting |
| 7. Dynasty | a family of rulers who rule over a country for a long period of time |
| 8. Empire | a group of countries or regions that are controlled by one ruler or one government |
| 9. Golden age | a period of period of peace, prosperity, and cultural achievements |
| 10. Gynaeceum | rooms in a Greek house set aside for women |
| 11. Krater | a large vase used to mix wine and water in Ancient Greece |
| 12. Monarchy | a form of government with a king or queen at the head who inherits the position due to his/her family |
| 13. Oligarchy | a small group of people having control of a country |
| 14. Periodization | dividing a subject into historical eras for purposes of analysis and study |
| 15. Republic | a country that is governed by elected representatives and by an elected leader (such as president)rather than by an inherited king or queen |
| 16. Source | a form of government with a king or queen at the head who inherits the position due to his/her family |
| 18. Symposium | gathering where men drank together, conversed, and enjoyed themselves usually following a dinner. |
