| Appellate | Authority of court to review a decision of a lower court |
| Apportionment | Distribution of representatives among the states based on the population of each state |
| Bicameral | Consisting of two houses |
| Bill of Attainder | A law that declares a person |
| Checks & Balances | a principle of the U.S. Constitution that gives each branch of government the power to check |
| Clause | A section or provision that defines the powers |
| Commerce | Trade |
| Compromise | agreement in which each side gives up part of what it wants to end a disagreement |
| Constitution | Document in which the principles |
| Deprived | To have something taken away or denied |
| Domestic | Occurring inside one's own country |
| Due Process | Impartial administration of the law |
| Enumeration | Listing items in order; numbering something |
| Ex Post Facto Law | A law that makes an act punishable as a crime even if the action was legal at the time it was committed |
| Expenditures | Government spending |
| Federalism | Principle of the U.S. Constitution that establishes the division of power between federal and state governments |
| Habeas Corpus | Constitutional protection against unlawful imprisonment (gov't must have you in custody and prove that they are lawfully holding you) |
| Impeach | to bring formal charges against a public official |
| Insurrection | Rebellion or revolt against a government or similarly established authority |
| Jurisdiction | power of a court to hear and decide cases in a defined area |
| Justice | Impartial treatment under law |
| Legislator | A person who makes or enacts laws |
| Letter of Marque | Licenses issued by Congress to private ship owners authorizing them to attack enemy merchant ships (legalizes piracy) |
