Optical Art

optical art vocabulary

optical art a style of art that uses visual effects to create the illusion of movement or depth
illusion something that tricks the eye into seeing something that is not really there
pattern a design that repeats shapes, lines, or colors
repetition using the same shape or design element over and over
contrast a strong difference between light and dark or different colors
geometric shapes shapes like squares, circles, and triangles with clear edges
movement the feeling that objects in an artwork are moving
balance the way visual elements are arranged so the artwork feels stable
symmetry when both sides of an artwork look the same
asymmetry when both sides of an artwork are different but still balanced
black and white colors often used in op art to create strong contrast
depth the illusion that objects are far away or close
perspective a technique used to show distance or space in art
distortion when shapes or lines are stretched or bent to create an effect
rhythm a repeated visual movement created by patterns
focus the area of an artwork that draws the viewer's attention
vibration a visual effect that makes shapes seem to shake or move
optical effect a visual trick created by lines, colors, or shapes
figure-ground the relationship between the main object and the background
visual perception how the brain interprets what the eyes see
