Plate Tectomics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| core | the innermost part of Earth |
| crust | the thin, outer layer of Earth where we live |
| mantle | the middle layer of Earth, contains magma |
| lithosphere | the hard outer portion of Earth that is broken into plates |
| asthenosphere | the soft, hot layer of the mantle that the plates move on |
| oceanic crust | the crust under the oceans that is thin and heavy |
| continental crust | the crust under the land that is thick |
| plate tectonics | the idea that Earth’s crust is broken into big pieces (plates) that slowly move |
| Pangaea | a supercontinent that existed millions of years ago when all the continents were joined together |
| convection current | the circular, upward movement of hot rock in the mantle that pushes the plates around |
| magma | hot, melted rock under Earth’s surface |
| lava | magma that comes out of a volcano onto Earth’s surface |
| subduction zone: | a place where an oceanic plate slides under a continental plate |
| seafloor spreading | when new ocean floor is made as plates pull apart and magma comes up |
| plate boundary | location where plates are moving and interacting with each other |
| convergent boundary | a plate boundary where two plates are moving towards each other |
| divergent boundary | a plate boundary where two plates are moving away from one another |
| transform fault boundary | a plate boundary where two plates are sliding past one another |
