other cardiovascular notes

functions of the cardiovascular system circulates blood through body in order to deliver oxygen and eliminate waste products (carried to lungs for removal of CO2 and kidneys in urinary system
arteries carry blood AWAY from heart
veins carry blood to the heart
capillaries only place where gas exchange can occur
pulmonary circulation right side of the heart to lungs and back
systemic circulation left side of the heart to body and back
systolic BP (top of ratio) normal adult BP 90-140, ventricles are contracting -> contraction phase (other phase of the cardiac cycle), heart pumps out blood via arteries
diastolic BP (bottom of ratio) normal adult BP 60-90, ventricles are relaxed -> relaxation phase (one phase of the cardiac cycle), heart in blood out via veins
sphygmomanometer cuff and gauge used to take BP
HDL cholesterol good (high density lipoprotein), whole grains
LDL cholesterol bad (low density lipoprotein), red meat, high saturated fats, oils, fried food, eggs
cholesterol total cholesterol <200 (HDL & LDL) numbers found on chemistry panel
cardio thoracic surgeon does open heart surgery
