cardiovascular diagnostic tests and procedures

TermDefinition
echocardiogram ultrasound of heart
angiogram used to locate blockage of artery
holter monitor portable EKG that monitors electrical impulses through the heart
stress test a test to check for blockages of coronary artery system (recreates event that caused the problem)
EKG electrocardiogram to analyze conduction through the heart (heart monitor, sees if heart is working)
defibrillation shocking the heart to stop it (from shaking) so it can correct itself and beat normally (usually w/ AED)
pacemaker internal defibrillator, regulates heartbeat
coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) bypassing the blocked artery w/ another artery taken from the patient from somewhere else ("plugging" in to veins to support blood flow)
balloon angioplasty w/ stent uses a balloon to open up clogged artery, usually performed by an interventional cardiologist
