| What is Evolution? | The process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arise |
| What is Natural Selection? | The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals do; a theory to explain the mechanism of evolution |
| What is an Adaptation? | A characteristic that improves an individual’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment |
| Who was Charles Darwin? | A British naturalist who made observations on a voyage and developed a theory on how species change over time called evolution by natural selection |
| What is Variation? | Any difference between organisms or groups of organisms of any species caused either by genetic differences or environmental factors |
| What is a Species? | A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring |
| What is DNA? | Deoxyribonucleic Acid. A molecule that is present in all living cells and that contains the information that determines the traits that a living thing inherits and needs to live |
| What does it mean to be fit OR to have fitness? | A measurement of the ability of a species to respond to the pressures of natural selection; the ability of individuals to survive to propagate their genes |
| What does it mean to be Heritable? | Capable of being passed from one generation to the next |
