why did the Spanish first move into the north American south-west? in an effort to obtain precious metals
what did the Spanish system do? what was it known as? forced native workers to farm,ranch, or mine for landlords and it was known as the encomeinda.
why did the Spanish monarchy abolish the encomeinda? because it brutally explioted native americans
what did the pueblo leader do? he led a revolt in response to the Spanish efforts to impose Spanish culture.
where was the first parlement English colony? it was in north america and was founded in Jamestown in 1607
what were the first English colonies set up for? they set up the hope of achieveny finacial gain for investors
what happened when Virginia became a royal colony? it came under the direct control of the king
what were Jamestown's problems during the first year cause by? settlers and attitude/impraacticiallity
what did the settlers direct most of their energy to that dismayed John Smith? directed most of their energy toward searching for gold and other riches
what turned Jamestown into a profitable entierprice? tobacco
what happened when more and more people settled in Jamestown? relations between settlers and Powhatan people worsened
what encouraged people to come to jamestown? the headright system offered them land
what happened under the headright system? anyone who paid for a passage to Virginia received 50 acres of land
what did indentured servant do? they agreed to a limited term of servitude in exchange for passage to north america as well as food and shelter
what happened in the early years of the virginian colony? a field laborer was most likely an indentured servant or a former indentured servant
what did nathaniel bacon do? he led a rebellion of frontier colonists against the virginian governement
what did bacons rebellion result in? it resulted from Nathaniel bacon's sympathy with the problems faced by the english settlers on the frontier
when did English puritans come to north america? begining of the 1620's
what did spoeratatists found providence as? they founded it as a place where people could worship as they chose, not as the government dictated
what did the Pequot war include? the virtual elimination of Pequot nation, extreme violence from English colonies and native American allies
where did the Dutch settle? they settled in new netherland
who led the quakers and where did they settle? led by William Penn and settled pennsylavannia
what principles was pennsylvannia founded on? social equality and religious tolerance
how was north American colonies similar in the 1600s? they need to attract settlers in order to prosper
