EES 3.1

TermDefinition
water a colorless, transparent, odorless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.
capillary action the spontaneous movement of a liquid through narrow spaces, like pores or tubes, driven by adhesion (attraction to other molecules) and cohesion (attraction to itself) overcoming gravity
cohesion the sticking together of particles of the same substance
adhesion the action or process of adhering to a surface or object
polarity physical (observable without changing identity, like color, density, melting point) and chemical (describing potential to form new substances, like flammability).
Transfer The movement of something (like energy, heat, or matter) from one place or object to another.
Energy The ability to do work or cause change (for example: heat, light, motion).
Atmosphere The layer of gases that surrounds Earth.
Hydrosphere All the water on Earth, including oceans, rivers, lakes, glaciers, groundwater, and water vapor.
Climate The average weather conditions of a place over a long period of time.
Convection The transfer of heat through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases).
Freeze To change from a liquid to a solid due to a decrease in temperature.
Dissolve When a substance mixes evenly into another substance and becomes part of a solution.
Specific Heat Capacity The amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of a substance by 1°C.
Solid A state of matter with a fixed shape and volume.
Liquid A state of matter with a fixed volume but no fixed shape.
Gas A state of matter with no fixed shape or volume.
Solute The substance that is dissolved in a solution.
Solvent The substance that does the dissolving in a solution.
Solution A mixture in which a solute is evenly dissolved in a solvent.
Surface Tension The tendency of liquid molecules at the surface to stick together, forming a “skin.”
Water Cycle The continuous movement of water on, above, and below Earth’s surface through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.
Kelvin Scale A temperature scale that starts at absolute zero; used mainly in science.
Absolute Scale Another name for the Kelvin temperature scale.
Universal Solvent Water, because it can dissolve many different substances.
Homogeneous Solution A mixture that is evenly mixed throughout.
Heterogeneous Solution A mixture that is not evenly mixed and has visible different parts.
Examples of Heterogeneous Solutions Oil and water, sand in water, salad.
Examples of Homogeneous Solutions Salt water, sugar water, air.
Example of Cohesion Water droplets forming beads on a leaf
Example of Adhesion Water sticking to the sides of a glass.
Example of Surface Tension A paper clip floating on water.
Example of Capillary Action Water moving up a plant’s roots or up a paper towel.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
