Homeostasis Keeping the body’s internal conditions stable (like temperature and blood sugar)
Medical History A record of a person’s past and present health problems.
Current History Information about the patient’s health issue right now.
Previous History Past illnesses, surgeries, or treatments.
Social History Information about lifestyle (smoking, alcohol, job, living situation).
Family History Health problems that run in the family.
Chief Complaint The main reason a patient seeks medical help.
Physical Signs Things a doctor can see or measure (fever, rash, swelling).
Symptoms What the patient feels (pain, nausea, dizziness).
Diagnosis The name of the illness or condition.
Differential Diagnosis A list of possible illnesses with similar symptoms.
Empathy Understanding and caring about how someone feels.
Demeanor How a person acts or behaves.
Tact Being careful and respectful when speaking.
Artery A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
Vein A blood vessel that carries blood to the heart.
Hyper- Means too much or high.
Hypo- Means too little or low.
-emia A condition of the blood (like anemia).
itis Inflammation (swelling) of a body part.
Chemical Reaction When substances change into new substances.
HIPAA A law that protects patient health information.
Risk Factor Something that increases the chance of disease.
Triage Deciding who needs medical care first.
Immune System The body’s defense against illness.
Mucus A slippery fluid that protects and traps germs.
Lymph A clear fluid that helps fight infection.
Lymph Nodes Small glands that filter germs from lymph.
Cancer A disease where cells grow out of control.
Carcinogen Something that can cause cancer.
Inflammation Redness, swelling, heat, and pain from injury or infection.
