Unit 4 vocabulary flash cards

TermDefinition
Precise adj. Exact and detailed; Make sure your information is precise!
Credibility n. The quality of being trustworthy; I have a lot of credibility.
Relevant adj. Pertaining to or applicable to a topic; You must use relevant evidence in your essay.
Bias n. general tendency or leaning in one direction; partial toward one view over another; People usually have a bias towards one side or the other.
Counterclaim n. an opposing claim that disagrees with the thesis; Including a counterclaim can make your essay more impartial and less biased.
Rebuttal n. Response to the counterclaim. Rebuttals support the claim in an argument/ debate; A rebuttal can help to reinforce your original claim.
Purpose n. The intent or aim; Many kids fail to find a purpose in school, but I think otherwise.
Audience n. The person/people for whom a text is written; People usually market their products to a target audience.
Expository Techniques n. the elements an author uses that focus on central idea, provide evidence and examples, and present logical conclusions; Usually people will include a lot of expository techniques in their writing.
Narrative Techniques n. Elements an author uses to tell a story, including description, dialogue, pacing, and reflection. Most books have a few narrative techniques.
Citation n. brief reference within the text that provides readers with the source of the information. Most teachers require you to include citations in your essays.
Latin Prefix In- Not or in/on; Word: Inside; Definition: Within the confines of; Sentence: I am currently inside my house.
Latin Root -Credere- To send out; release; Word: Credentials; Definition: A qualification that says you are suitable for something; Sentence: We hired him because of his credentials.
Decipher v. succeed in interpreting or understanding something; I finally was able to decipher the riddle.
Invincible adj. impossible to defeat; At that moment I felt truly invincible.
Contraption n. machine that seems strange or unnecessarily complicated; "That's a neat contraption," Bill said.
Newfangled adj. invented only recently and, therefore, strange-seeming; All this newfangled technology really confuses me.
Ingenuity n. the quality of being original and clever; Good inventors have a lot of ingenuity.
Improvisations n. things that are created without any preparation; Unfortunately I had to make some improvisations.
Engineer n. person with scientific training who designs and builds machines, products, or systems; I started working as an electrical engineer.
Generators n. Machines that produce electricity; The generators were humming in the background.
Current n. flow of electricity; You can be shocked by an electrical current.
Cunning adj. skillful; clever; He was then most cunning man in then world.
Veered v. changed directions; Unfortunately, they veered off course and got lost in the middle of the Atacama Desert.
