TermDefinition
Greenhouse gases Gases in the atmosphere that trap heat and keep Earth warm. Examples include carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor.
Greenhouse effect The natural process where greenhouse gases trap heat from the Sun. This keeps Earth warm enough for life.
Climate The average weather conditions of a place over many years. Includes temperature, rainfall, and seasons.
Human climate How human activities affect Earth’s climate. Examples include burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
Absorption of heat When an object or surface takes in heat energy. This causes it to warm up.
Atmospheric heating The warming of Earth’s atmosphere by trapped heat. It happens because greenhouse gases hold heat in the air.
Water vapor (H₂O) Water in gas form found in the atmosphere. It is the most abundant greenhouse gas.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) A greenhouse gas released by breathing, burning fossil fuels, and factories. It is a major cause of climate change.
Methane (CH₄) A strong greenhouse gas released by livestock, landfills, and natural gas leaks. It traps more heat than carbon dioxide.
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) A greenhouse gas released mainly from agriculture and fertilizers. It also contributes to global warming.
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) Man-made gases used in older cooling systems. They trap heat and damage the atmosphere.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) Man-made greenhouse gases used in refrigerators and air conditioners. They trap large amounts of heat.
Ozone (O₃) A gas that forms a layer protecting Earth from harmful UV rays. It can also act as a greenhouse gas.
Burning fossil fuels Using coal, oil, or natural gas for energy. This releases large amounts of carbon dioxide.
Refrigerant A chemical used in refrigerators and air conditioners. Some refrigerants are powerful greenhouse gases.
Respiration The process by which living things breathe. It releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Natural forest fires Wildfires started by natural causes like lightning. They release carbon dioxide and smoke into the air.
Emissions Gases or particles released into the atmosphere. Often come from cars, factories, and power plants.
Temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is. It affects weather and climate patterns.
Precipitation Water that falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. It is a key part of climate.
Agriculture practices Farming activities such as raising livestock and using fertilizers. They can release greenhouse gases into the air.
Volcanic eruptions When volcanoes release lava, ash, and gases. They can affect Earth’s climate for short periods.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
