| strata | layers of rock |
| crust | the top layer on the surface of the Earth |
| magma | molten rock, called lava when it reaches Earth's surface |
| vents | cracks in the Earth's crust where lava comes out |
| erosion | the breaking-down of rocks or soil from wind, water, ice |
| glacier | slow-moving river of ice |
| talus slope | piles of broken boulders, rocks, and soil at the bottom of a mountain |
| shelter | a safe place away form danger or elements of weather |
| scarcely | hardly; slightly; by only a little bit |
| eruption | an explosion or outburst because of pressure |
| extreme | of a kind or degree that is much beyond what is normal or average; extraordinary; very harsh; severe |
| exposed | uncovered; visible |
| spectacular | a sight that is amazing and special |
