| Theme | the central message about life revealed in a literary work |
| Main idea | The central thought or most important idea of a text |
| motif | a recurring idea, object, or image that helps develop a theme |
| symbol | something that represents something else |
| mood | the emotional atmosphere of the story |
| tone | the author's attitude toward the subject of audience |
| setting | the time, place, in which the story occurs |
| plot diagram | a visual representation of a story's structure: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution |
| exposition | the beginning of the story that introduces the characters and setting |
| rising action | the seious of events that build tension and leads to the climax |
| climax | the turning point in the story |
| resolution | the conclusion of the story where the conflict is resolved |
| internal conflict | a struggle that takes place within the character's mind |
| external conflict | a struggle between a character and an outside force (another character, society, or nature. |
| direct characterization | when the author tells you specifically about a character's traits |
| indirect characterization | When the author reveals character traits through what the character says, does, thinks, or the effect they have on others. |
| unreliable narrator | a narrator whose version of events cannot be trusted |
| analysis | examining parts of a text to better understand its meaning. |
| inference | a logical conclusion drawn from textual evidence and reasoning. |
| catharsis | the emotional release experienced by the audience |
